Allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances to food are no longer uncommon in our society. While the number of people actually suffering from food allergies is increasing slightly, the number of people suffering from intolerances and sensitivities is rising rapidly. Susanne Kaufmann™ is keen to inform you about the ingredients in our cosmetics and their possible effects on people with allergies, intolerances, or sensitivities.
Subtle Difference. An allergy is a pronounced immune system reaction by the body that is either immediate or only slightly delayed. Antibodies are formed immediately and combine with the allergen, which can cause a diverse reaction of unfortunately life-threatening symptoms. In contrast to an allergy, an intolerance is a nonimmunological response of the body to certain proteins, carbohydrates, and chemical compounds and is not life-threatening but can greatly affect daily life. A sensitivity is a food-induced, unspecified condition that is difficult to associate with particular foods due to the time delay between consumption and reaction. Allergies and intolerances can be detected easily with tests. In the case of sensitivities, it is often helpful to adjust the diet and lifestyle. Celiac disease (gluten sensitivity) is the exception: it is both a food allergy and an autoimmune disease. Gluten, the elastic protein substance contained in certain grains, causes chronic inflammation and damage to the intestinal mucosa. Those affected should refrain from gluten for life.
Great Effect. In the case of food, it is mandatory to disclose any possible allergens. For cosmetic products, this is not yet the case. All Susanne Kaufmann™ products are uncompromisingly natural. We do not use any artificial or mineral oil–based ingredients whatsoever. For each of our Susanne Kaufmann™ products, you will find a complete listing of all ingredients on the packaging or package leaflet. In our online shop, you will find the ingredients for each product listed. If you move your mouse (or tap on the screen of your tablet or phone) over the ingredient name, a small pop-up text box informs you in detail about the respective ingredient. This allows you to individually decide whether the product is suitable for you. In the case of celiac disease, it is important to look out for the terms for wheat (Triticum aestivum, Triticum vulgare, or Triticum turgidum durum), rye (Secale cereale), barley (Hordeum districhon or Hordeum vulgare), spelt (Triticum spelta), and oats (Avena sativa or Avena strigosa). Even in small doses, these can lead to reactions in someone with celiac disease. Therefore, the German Celiac Society advises to use gluten-free face-care products, because these can be absorbed through the mouth and thus enter the gastrointestinal tract. Body creams and shower gels are harmless to adults, according to the German Celiac Society. In the case of children, the company advises to use gluten-free products due to oral exposure.
