What Are the Skincare Benefits of Whey?

Discover the natural remedy that has been used for centuries to cure ailments.

Susanne Kaufmann has been harnessing these positive properties of lactic acid in her whey baths for quite a while now. Ingo Metzler, a farmer and brand ambassador from the very beginning, supplies the whey for these treatments, having discovered the nourishing effect of the by-product on the skin more than 25 years ago.

Wondering what the secret is? Ingo Metzler only ever uses grass-fed milk to produce whey because it contains more skin-boosting vitamins and fatty acids, such as omega 3 and linolenic acid, than standard cow’s milk.

Here's all you need to know about the powerful benefits of whey on the skin and how to use it at home.

The 5 main benefits of whey on the skin

In addition to plenty of vitamins, antioxidants, and protein, whey has a high content of lactic acid. The body can also produce this itself – it appears naturally in organs and various secretions, and it is also found in the skin’s protective acid mantle. The chemical composition of the lactic acid contained in whey and the lactic acid produced by the human body is the same. This means that whey is non-irritating and is well absorbed by the skin.

Due to its unique chemical composition, whey offers several benefits to the skin.

1. Mantains the natural skin barrier

The skin’s natural process for maintaining moisture relies on lactic acid. It's found in the substances in the epidermis that store moisture so as to maintain sufficient hydration levels over time. By using whey, you can support the natural skin barrier for a firmer and more supple skin.

2. Supports and balance the skin's pH

When applied externally, natural lactic acid helps to stabilize the skin’s pH level, which is essential to its health. Whey's lactic acid is only slightly acidic, with 7 as the target value.

3. Suitable for sensitive skin

Skincare products containing whey are extremely gentle and suitable for all skin types. In actual fact, whey benefits most to people with sensitive skin prone to allergies, due to its nourishing and balancing properties that help to repair the skin barrier.

4. Removes dead cells

Lactic acid also has a keratolytic effect that helps to gently break down the outer layers of the skin. Whey is therefore efficient to get rid of calluses and dead skin cells.

5. Treats impurities, blemishes and pigmentation

Lactic acid acts like a gentle scrub on the skin, leaving the complexion looking more even. If applied regularly, pigmentation and age spots can visibly fade. This powerful and totally natural ingredient can also help to reduce skin blemishes and impurities.

How to use whey at home

Susanne Kaufmann's favourite method is a whey bath. This intense treatment is truly unique and is used in many of our spas. You can also enjoy the same benefits at home with our Herbal Whey Bath.

Here how to create your own nourishing bath with whey:
  1. Run a bath and make sure the temperature of the water is between 35 and 40°C.
  2. Add 5-7 teaspoonfuls in the warm water.
  3. Relax in the warm water for up to 30 minutes and let the nourishing plant extracts soothe your body and senses.

For more intense effects, experts also recommend whey baths as a treating method for extremely dry skin and chronic skin conditions like neurodermatitis. As whey has also a detoxifying and firming effect, it's ideal to eliminate toxins and purify the skin.
