The Effects of Smog on the Skin’s Protective System

Terms such as smog, ozone, dust particles, UVA and UVB rays, and free radicals are increasingly mentioned in connection with premature skin aging. Scientific studies have long since proven that this connection is not an invention of the beauty industry. We know which skin care products and rituals you can use to protect your skin from environmental influences; and, at the same time, we would like to encourage you to work with us all to reduce these influences.

The word “smog” is composed of the words “smoke” and “fog”, and describes a high concentration of pollutants that are suspended in the air within a city due to a lack of wind and specific weather conditions. Smog consists of dust particles, soot, ozone, nitrous gases, and sulfur dioxide. As you are most likely to see it during the winter months, a distinction is made between winter and summer smog. In the case of summer smog, the particles react in combination with UV radiation from the sun. No matter what time of year it is, the effects of smog on the human body are well known, ranging from headaches and respiratory diseases to skin irritations. In particular, dust particles have recently received increased attention because the extremely fine particles can penetrate the skin and react there with the cells.

Skin care: The idea that country air ensures a radiant complexion is not an old wives’ tale. Fresh air is enjoyable to breathe, and the increased oxygen content has a positive effect on our metabolism. But what can city dwellers do to beat environmental influences such as smog and dust particles? Susanne Kaufmann advises a three-step ritual: Start with thorough cleansing in the morning and in the evening with a gentle cleansing gel or milk. Follow up by using toner and rich moisturizer appropriate for your skin type. In our products with skin cell protection, we rely on the active ingredient ectoine, which is extracted from algae. It repairs cells and supports the elasticity of the skin. To help the skin retain enough moisture, our formulas are supplemented with silk proteins and herbal hyaluronic acid.

What’s more, we try to optimize the environmental impact of the production and packaging of our products. We rely on solar energy and 100% recyclable packaging materials, which are already made from recycled raw materials.
